I agree entirely. It is always more pleasant to say a kind word that may brighten some ones day.
When I pass someone I always say ‘hello’ and I often say ‘how are you’. It may take their mind off what they are thinking and make them more pleasant that someone is enquiring about them. They maybe having a miserable thought and you shift their thought into another place.
I, always try to think pleasant thought for the day and sometimes my day is more pleasant!
