Bullying

I don’t know what it is with bullying these days. Wait, hear me out. When I was young, I was bullied although we called it something else. It made us tough, but we had to say terrible things to a person’s face.

I’m not going to ever suggest kids these days are soft. I am going to say, kids these days get it easy. If they couldn’t hide behind their computer screens and their fake profiles, they would see the damage they do on the cold face.

Kids these days skip a lot of stages and very quickly go to “you should kill yourself!” I wanna meet those kids, they deserve to be throat-punched. I think it’s akin to, I want you no longer breathing.

I’ve never done it, but I like threats that people never know if I’m serious or when they will get delivered my threats.

Young kids need to learn of the consequences of their actions. Can they please stop telling other kids they should kill themselves?

No! I mean it!

Update on a Few Things

Update on a Few Things

So, I have been intending to follow up on a few things lately, but I’ve been slack in my efforts to use speech to text. Some things are hard to say out loud.

I’ve been meaning to follow up on the bullying I received from the not-for-profit self-advocacy group I’ve been volunteering at for over ten years. I’m letting the dust settle on that for a little bit longer, but the baseline is that my time with them is going to come to an end soon as they took my blog link off their website, making such statements as ‘it’s not even about brain injury’. Clearly, they didn’t look very hard because I’m sure I stated in my profile its brain injury done differently. It’s a lost cause and it’s time to find a new tribe.

Add to this the Gaslighting I’ve been receiving from my mental health care provider. They have done very well at the opposite of their job. Ever wonder why I don’t name and shame providers? Yeah, now you understand.

I’ll unpack both things another time in more detail.

I often hope how I teach organisations to respect and treat me, is how they will continue to treat all their clients or patients. Some are slow learners and if they don’t learn, I take my funding elsewhere.

I have been doing too much as last Thursday I had a migraine that whipped me out for a day and another four of feeling seedy. But I now have injectable Tramadol in my home and no, I do not intend to inject myself.

Censorship – The Next Exciting Episode

This week, I am following up on last week’s post and asking for your support for my blog and my intention to do brain injury differently. My question is “Is bullying OK?”

So, had a very ordinary meeting last Tuesday, trying to convince people who had not bothered to read my blog, that the blog link remains on their website (that features a disclaimer) for the group I’ve volunteered for 10+ years.

A fellow-member and friend suggested if I wanted to have my blog appeal to more people, I should change it. To be blunt, I could write about brain injury but it’s not sexy and people don’t want to know anything about brain injury until it’s absolutely relevant to them.

I could write about risk-taking behaviour but you don’t have to drink, take drugs and try to drive a car and potentially kill people while you nearly kill yourself to get a brain injury. I’ve done none of those things and I have a brain injury.

I am probably only alive because I didn’t do drugs, I barely drank. I found alcohol used to make me feel like my head was swimming. Probably because alcohol thins your blood and my AVM once diagnosed was stated as being enormous. So, I suspect its why I was feeling unwell I just didn’t have an interest in doing something that made me feel so awful.

That I don’t ever mention companies or organisations good, bad or otherwise, should tell you I have some ethics.

That’s this NGO (Non-Government Organisation/Not for Profit) thinks to bully me to remaining quiet for the bullying they think to visit on its long standing members and that it’s acceptable. Other members have been destroyed by its poor behaviour and so, if you are still with me? You don’t have to love everything I write or stand for, but if you have any appreciation for what I stand for please Like, comment (positively please) and share through your networks.

My deadline to have support in my corner is 14th June, 2022.

Thanking you in advance and with much love and predication.

Off the Grid

Off the Grid

Off the Grid

Today is Saturday and it’s a day I let myself go ‘off grid’. It’s a way to survive, I’ve broken so many of my own rules today.

  1. I turned on my mobile phone.
  2. I put on a bra (not really).
  3. I left the house.

I walked ten minutes to the tram and caught the tram to the city. (it takes thirty minutes) Had about four conversations by the time I got to the city. WENT TO MY FIRST EVER RALLY.

Taxi rally

It was a Taxi rally, or a rally for Taxi drivers to be paid appropriately for their Taxi licences. Oh Yeah!

  1. I checked emails.

Emails feel like work, without the luxury of sitting at a desk in an office.

These days, I maintain two emails. One for personal “stuff” and the second for blogs. (The ones I follow and the one’s that follow me.)

Emails need to start only taking four hours or less a day. This is why even when I’m on a tram between appointments, I’ll cull emails.

Multitasking, Multitasking, Multitasking.

Multitasking

I should mention the Pedometer on my phone normally tells me I collected twenty-six steps, which must have been from midnight and 2am when I take my phone to bed to charge.

Today, 2,810 steps and I don’t carry my phone on my person, so all the steps I did doing laundry, chores and baking after getting home.

Pedometer

Think I’m going off-grid tomorrow instead. Going to be sore tomorrow. Yeah you are….

Nearly thirteen years ago, I was doing a job that apparently required a certificate IV in work place training and assessment. While I had been and admin assistant, I did the work of a TPO (Training Placement Officer).

Admin assistant

I had twice attempted the course while I was in the role, but while I passed the practical I hadn’t had time to do the written.

After three years in the role, I was seriously shafted. Bullied by other staff who were incompetent and just didn’t want to do their job. Turns out putting your head down and getting on with the actual ‘work’ didn’t prove enough that you weren’t the problem.

Office work

In HR terms, I was the easier person to get rid of and worst of all, I was dumped out into the market place at a time no one in the industry was employing, because contracts were up for renewal. I managed to score a job with a TAFE with their work for the Dole area and they had me ‘Culling files’. The staff running around the office like chooks with their heads cut off and I could tell they were struggling however, they didn’t trust my knowledge of the contract. (How their business operated) so they wouldn’t give me any responsibility. They kept me as a casual until they knew what ongoing contracts they had.

I had to interview for a position back in the region I had spent three years working for the first orgainisation and I could manage the clientele very well.

Client management

The clients were all ages and the bulk of my workload was the “You don’t understand! I’ve been a student for the last fifteen years, I need to take a year off.”

Yeah! Damn eighteen-year old’s who think High School was going to be enough to set them straight. Never fear, I had a few clients that were the complete opposite, remembered not by name, but by the black Doc Martin boots she wore with purple laces.

Doc Martens

She had, had a job getting up at 4amworking with horses. She would do a job again with that kind of start time. That job gave me a half a day of conflict resolution training by someone who trained people at Quantico in the States.

There were some clients in that region when they left the office, we would sigh with relief, clean up the destruction they left in their wake and mutter to each other “That one! Clocktower with a rifle! Next week!”

Bad clients

Slight exaggeration, but still. The sentiment was not far off.

I made a little fib about ‘having’ my Cert IV for that job! They put me in an office without net, that was not fully set up. No networked computers. I had dial-up internet and I was on ‘graphics-heavy software’ and I was often the ‘Helpdesk’ over the phone to untrained staff at another office.

To make my point, everything was slow. My printer was also a fax machine and my phone.

For safety purposes, I should not have ever opened the door for anyone. I did for clients and I had to hope for the best obviously. More experienced staff who never came to my office rang for contacts I had maintained from my previous work.

Safety reasons

Once they had my knowledge and expertise, they got rid of me. Sorry, that was so long and painful, however trust me, that was the short version.

Termination

Next, stay tuned for a lesson on how to correctly wash dishes… No really.

Acronyms Part 1

Acromyms 1

ACRONYMS! Part 1

In the early naughty (2000’s) I got a job with an NGO. I started as a client, I was a considerably consistent client and then I was a very consistent staff member for 3 years, despite every 3 months being made to apply for my job again. And consistently being passed over so they could give someone else a much needed position, knowing another position would soon be available for me, so I could have some permanency.

On one occasion I was passed over for a job I was already doing and then I was left to be in the office to train that person. Anyway, I’ll let you guess what kind of job/industry it was with this clue.

The industry was rife with ACRONYM’S!

They had then for EVERYTHING!TAF

First, clients were REF (referred) to us.

Here’s some others –

ETS: Expected to start!

P: Placed!

DNS: Did not start!

PR: Participants Report!

Now, this might give you some ideas what industry I was in. If not here’s a few more – when the clients were finished with us. These were other codes such as:-

END: Contract ended

EX/PTW: Exited/Part time work

EX/FTW: Exited/Full time work

EX/RTW: Exited/Return to work

My very favourite exit code was “WUK”

It was a rare one but when it came someone would ask in the office. It was the kind of environment where there was little privacy. But you learnt by osmosis!

WUK: Stands for “Whereabouts Unknown!”

When I started in this job I was an Administrative Assistant, I never understood what it meant to be in “Admin” but basically means you do whatever needs doing.

Later, when the organisation/company (they ran like a company) restructured. I managed to keep a job and was kindly given the title of T.P.O. (Training Placement Officer) which was a job I had long been doing on the Admin salary. But they made me Part Time! Making it very challenging to do a full time job!

I was only paid to do 19 hours a week. I often stayed after the other girls left at 5pm, I would finally do my job, as I was training 2 Admin girls and a TPC (Training Placement Co-ordinator).

On Wednesday, I would arrive at work and announce to the girls, “Get your questions ready and line up at my desk!”

I’ve done the maths and I should be out of here by lunch!”

The papers would ruffle and there was panic in the air. And my boss would come out at midday and ask me to stay.

I would still be there at 4pm.

Apparently if I’d been doing full time hours for 2 weeks, company policy was that full time hours should have been made permanent.

One day I was walking through the Bourke Street Mall in the city of Melbourne. I had received a call from a new recruit back in the office. I kept walking so I could concentrate on training the Admin Assistant now to use a very graph-heavy government database system, it was very “it’s the thing, above the thing and the thing!”

In the end due to a HR issue I was restructured out of my job. Two incompetent women in office claimed I was bullying them. It was actually the other way round.

After I was gone, they soon followed Effectively, I got the shaft!

Unlike others I had no real presence in the industry as I’d always been in the office working.

I eventually found some work with a TAFE, doing the same job and while they all ran around like headless chooks, they had me “culling exited files.” I was under-utilised because they didn’t trust my ability to do a job.

Rather under-utilized. Sadly that job too ended. This was a job I had in my early 30’s for about 4 years. And because it was very stressful, my medical condition started to show, some odd symptoms and I was diagnosed in the same week, I was let go from the 2nd employer.

That was a really shitty week.

So if you didn’t work out the industry from all those ACRONYMS. I’ll give you one last one to help.

W4D: Work for the dole

CWC: Community Work Co-Ordinator

And around the office we had many nicknames for it “Work for the coffee scroll” being one of them.

I used to think I was good at my job. I was nice to the people who needed it and I laid down the law and was the “hard-ass” to those that needed it! I was the only one in the office who knew how.

There is one big thing this job prepared me for and that was the understanding of ACRONYMS!

Please be prepared for Part 2 to this.
