Football and Hangovers

About seven years ago, a regular Monday carer, let’s call her Monday. Turned up to work on Monday after her team the Bulldogs had won the Grand Final on the Saturday. She stood at the kitchen sink preparing herself to do the dishes, I had reason to ask if she was still hungover? She replied she was still “Dusty!”

This is not what the kids are calling hungover these days.  Monday’s tattoo was on her upper back just below her neck where she had gotten a Bulldog tattoo. She already had tattoo’s so not a stretch.

I used to have a younger (25-year-old) carer that was a Richmond supporter. She would tell me all about the start of the season and how swell her team was expected to go and she and her family would travel to the Punt Road, Richmond Oval to watch them practice. I would have to remind her I didn’t need to know. Lord love her.

Her team won the Premiership, I think one year I had her and we were lucky enough to run into my people. I like my people to meet my people. I mention previous carers all the time. They are so much a part of my life when their lives take them away from me the stories, I share keep them present.

Living with Migraines

Living with Migraines

Sometimes, I will arrive at an appointment and announce when asked how I am that “I’ve had a migraine”. Because generally I’m a walking/talking migraine most days but, occasionally I get lucky and I can’t do adulting. No phone, no TV, no sitting on the couch even. Instead, I’m in bed before 10pm, somewhat high on Tramadol. Not “High” enough but it’s hopefully going to help me get to sleep so I can sleep it off and the following day maybe it’s gone.

Anyway, this happened Tuesday, my first appointment out of my home and what answer do you think I got? No, all of those options did not happen. Instead, I was greeted with “Its going around everyone’s got it. Migraine! I had a migraine last night!” Um, I don’t know about anyone else who has ever had a migraine but, NOT CONTAGIOUS!

If I could have been out with my worst migraine to date, I’ve yet to write about when I was 23 and barely responsive and could have shared the wealth on that one to ease the load. I would have shared it. I’m not exaggerating when I say I WANTED TO DIE!

So, to say the least, not helpful when people say the above when you are hungover from a migraine. Even though it didn’t wipe me out completely, I was still hungover mid-week. Do people understand why I was never a drinker?

To be continued………

Punchline Revealed

Punchline Revealed

I think the punchline to the previous post is that despite eating dinner by 7pm, doing the classic dinner and a show, I was actually home by 11.30pm.

Despite being completely spent and everything hurt from the 4,500 steps I’d managed all past a time I’m normally committed to my couch, I couldn’t go to bed until 2am.

AND I WAS STILL AWAKE AT 4AM.

It takes me days to get over it. I don’t drink, so I really don’t understand the drinking/partying mentality. Where you are hungover the next day, or is this just getting old?

Did I mention I didn’t even drink?

Neuro

Neuro!

Part 1

I’m seeing a Neuro (as in Neurologist or Surgeon) tomorrow at a Stroke Clinic at the Alfred Hospital.

I haven’t been to a specialist for maybe 5 years, since having been given the ‘all-clear’.

But I’m thinking how to cover the things he might need to hear to get some ‘Action’!

Might start with a stocktake of the last 7 days and how many of those days were migraine free:

Let’s see              Monday – Migraine

Tuesday – Hangover from said migraine

Wednesday – Hung-over still

Thursday – Slept until 2pm!

And that was while a chainsaw was going on next door and when that stopped they went on to the wood chipper!

Had I prepared to leave the house I would have fed that operator into the wood chipper!

Friday – OK, I think

Saturday – bit of a niggle behind my eye.

Sunday – again!

So total migraine free days – 1

Part 2

Well, that all turned out to be a bit of a bust! Keeping in mind consistency is the key.

Public clinic’s (Specialist ones run within the hospitals) you need to request to have the same specialist each time. I even go to the point of calling the day before to confirm I get to see the same guy who has always seen me.

And despite all my efforts, which include a mention to reception on the way in, I end up in a small consulting room with someone who looks younger than me!

I know, I know! I’m not saying only see a Neurologist if they are old and grey! But I don’t know, I think I want them to be older than I am.

Oh yeah. And there always seems to be a student in the room. Because I always feel compelled to explain all the things that have been discussed. Ie. What Botox is good for, not just faces…..having had Botox in my arm twice and my calf twice also.
