Crazy Cat Lady

Crazy Cat Lady

So, it is to say I think we are well overdue a crazy cat lady post. About a month ago a neighbour offered to take me out to the Cat Protection Society. We should all be aware she definitely meant Cat Protection Society. I had hoped to bring home a kitten. I was asked if I wanted a boy or a girl. Plus several other questions which I just wanted to smile serenely and say “Yes!” But alas, we were a bit early for kitten season, “I’m sorry, what?” I thought kitten season was all year round. Alas, if you also thought that you would be wrong also.

Kitten season falls between November and April. Which would be the warmer months here in Australia. My Oracle of Life just told me something completely different. But my friend, the mother to her four existing felines and one human and a foster Mum to boot and I were not so easily discouraged. We went to peruse the cats in the neat, clean and well set out cat hotel. We know it’s a cat shelter, but hotel sounds better, right? Stickers on each cat window indicated if the cat was ready for adoption, could live with other cats or dogs or what kind of environment would be ideal, family, no children, quiet older household, etc.  You can open the door to the cat condo’s and meet the cats, using hand sanitiser in between obviously, and if you were really keen on a cat you could lift it out of its hidey hole and snuggle it or take it into a meeting room to spend a minute or two getting to know each other.

Anyone else thinking this is how dating could work better? I mean, don’t answer that.

We both met a few adorable cats. I met a beautiful guy called Ginge. He was a surrender cat. But he gave me head butts and I got him out and held him. I could have left that day with him and returned for a kitten a month later, if my friend didn’t point out to me, he had a medical note on his profile. We asked and he was prone to UTI’s. Poor bastard, my friend pointed out that would mean a special diet and expensive vet bills ongoing, I could not afford. So, alas we both departed empty handed. He was later adopted so that’s a happy outcome for Ginge.

Another couple were there and were also meeting and greeting the different cats. I suggested to them we should all just move in there, keep the staff to manage the litter trays and we could just spend all day and night with all the cats.

I don’t know if it’s obvious or not? I only have one cat, singular, however I practice being a multi-cat household often – at least in mentality, if not in reality.

A friend has five and I often point in her direction when meeting other people who start the cat conversation and they will look at me to suggest I should be advising my friend that she has too many. How dare they? I shut it down by informing them its inspirational. My friend catches on and tells them she used to have eight cats and even she realised that was to many and she rehomed three to her father.

Friday look

Pets

I know someone, not really a friend, but an acquaintance I guess. She has two cats and a dog and a husband and a job. Whatever, irrelevant.

She told me once how her cats would go out the pet door and play during the day and when she returned home, she would do a ‘head count’. She would find them lined up in the lounge.

Head count went something like this.

‘Cat, cat, dog.’

2 cats and a dog

One day the head count went something a little different.

‘Cat, cat, cat, dog.’

Extra cat

What the?

Apparently, they had bought home a friend.

Reminds me of this……

Last week, I went to put something away in the linen cupboard, I stopped at the fridge in the kitchen spotting something in the laundry.

There was a black and white thing ‘eating Jamima’s food!’

Visitor

“Hey!” and some other inappropriate words.

The back door was open and Jamima had obviously came back inside and clearly this ‘thing’ that feels our home is its second home, decided to come inside.

The ‘thing’ scrambled away.

I guess Jamima just lost her privileges to come and go from the backyard as she pleases.

It’s really ordinary feeling when you feel like you’re on the outside looking in or the inside looking out.

Looking outside

No one understands or seems to care to try to understand. They don’t seem to care that your being left out.

It’s cold and lonely out here and the sharpest uncaring comment has the power to lead me to tears.

It’s a really shitty place in a family to feel like the black sheep.

Now, to cry myself to sleep.

UBC, Why We Love Them

UBC, Why we Love Them!

Pets really can be a great source of relief from Mental Health issues. This is a perfect example of why I love my cat! You Bastard Cat! Noelle told me of this term, so credit where credit is due…

These days, my cat Jamina ‘Patch the Pirate Cat’, Puddle duck will follow me around our home. My movements are pretty standard, bed or couch and during winter, Jamina watches a single bed doona with a polar fleece cover to see where that is going. If I’m moving around the house doing something, but the doona is still on the bed, she parks there knowing full well sooner or later I will go back to bed. She stays there, gets comfortable and sleeps to wait and yes, cats sleep.

Jamima

I think Jamina thinks she’s a person. Probably because I sleep a lot and I’m probably a bit cat!

These days, despite having a dining table, I eat my meals on the couch. I know it sounds bad, but I have had times when I’ve had every meal on the weekend in bed.

There are times I get to the couch with dinner a little late. My computer sits hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable. Because reading is migraine inducing, I will watch a show. Being one handed, it’s nice to watch something without ads, so I put on a TV show, so I could single task, but have some company. The show started and Jamina joined me on the couch. The TV was emblazoned with the words “SIX MONTHS LATER!”

And it stayed there the longest time!

Looking at Jamina I discovered she was sitting on the Wi-Fi mouse! UBC!

Human Rights

Human Rights

Human Rights

There are many examples, I will give where you would imagine, just because I have a disability and because someone collects a wage from a job where they provide a service to those with a disability that you would be treated with respect and provided the services they are entitled to.

I hope my blog over time will express my experience of this sector and that if it is challenging to give a client/patient/customer, what they need then, it’s ok to withhold a service, not delivered a service or just outright bully so you will stop asking.

There are times now, how I’m treated, is outright shocking! And I’m someone who knows what’s going on and how to organise my life and my needs and my services and I dread to think how the people who can’t self-advocate get treated.

I once received a call offering me Public Housing. I know these calls are often met with jubilation and great relief, but I often get a little grumpy and demand “Yes? Where is it?”

Even my friends no longer get excited anymore and demand to be told “Where is it?” On this occasion they building was a new apartment block and the gentleman on the phone after selling me the fact that it was fully functioning, disability friendly bathroom. He told me I couldn’t take my cat!

I am not one to smuggle my fur-baby into my home. People have to know I come with a cat!

I’ve had good house-mates and shitty house-mates. I’ve had shitty boyfriends. Shitty because they are not still here.

I’ve had shitty friends and good friends. All in the last 16 years. They have all come and gone and are no longer here.

The fur-baby is still here!

I often go days without seeing another human being. So my cat is not an optional housemate. I told the gentleman, my cat didn’t cope without me and I didn’t cope without her.

HE TOLD ME TO HAVE HER PUT DOWN!

Now I think you can now tell when I used the term ‘gentleman’ I was being very generous!
