Social Etiquette

How to behave yourself in social forums is next level. Yeah, we get it, the younger generation think anyone butchering the stickers and acronyms are Boomers. But the young kids are getting a lot of the etiquette wrong too.

I’ve joined community groups over the years and I know I was late to join the main social online forum. You know the one? I’m referring to (I won’t say the name!) the one designed to connect University students that the algorithms seem to think everyone in the whole fucking world needs to be friends. Yeah, that one.

Lesson Number 1. You send a friend request to a group. They don’t have to welcome you with open arms. If they accept you and welcome you in a post.

Lesson Number 2. Say Thanks for the add, if there is a question asked of you – Example “tell us about yourself?”

Lesson Number 3. Answer the fucking question.

I know we all get it wrong. However, the older generations have the experience of life before the internet, we actually know how to speak to each other. We will even still pick unpacked phones and call each other. It’s much harder to insult people or get away with it face to face.

Tram Stop

Tram Stop

I was standing at the tram stop the other day when waiting for a tram. In a perfect world every tram would be a flatbed tram (that’s accessible) and one pulled to a stop, but the doors didn’t open.

One of the other two women mentioned the tram stated it was not in service, I hadn’t noticed. I claimed poor eyesight and the other woman mentioned she’d broken her ankle at Christmas. Broken ankle lady stated she was doing a Masters in the effects of Social Media and the internet on society (I think). I got my phone out of my bag and looked at it. My phone apart from driving all the amazing things like text, phone, cull emails while out and countless other things. It is my watch, because I don’t have one.

I briefly looked at my phone then up and way down in to the distance, I saw a tram and commented that one was coming. Broken ankle/Masters degree looked at me and asked if I’d ‘Looked it up?’ I said I hadn’t but I had ‘Looked up’ and she told me I’d made a joke.

Even more amusing, was that Masters was older than I am, so she remembered a time without internet/computers and socializing online better than I do. So, for once I didn’t feel like the old one.

I would think this would be common for all people with an ABI, but people don’t realise the emphasis and importance on ‘sleep’.

Good Mental Health Day

Despite a busy week I managed to get down here two days in a row. This is what I had here yesterday. It was a yummy cwoissant (imagine me saying it with a bit of a French Accent) with pumpkin, feta and spinach with medicine. To go with the migraine I had.

Also had added drama of no landline or internet and my mobile was low on battery all friggin day!
Not suggesting the cause of yesterday’s migraine but sure as heck didn’t help!

Even got to scooter today! Two hipsters following me on the footpath on their bikes, huh? When I pulled up in front of the acupuncturist to park the Hipsters thanked me, I don’t know what for because I’m legally allowed to use the footpath and I have insurance. They legally cannot and don’t (have insurance.)

How’s your mother? I always get asked by my carers… My mum who was here for less than 24 hours, last week to smash some appointments and things.

My mum is really the only family member to support me and she also manages to be my biggest critic.

So, it’s often somewhat tongue in cheek I reply with a smart mouth “she was alive when she left and so was I”.

My mum and I have come a long way in the last ten years, in the early days of my disability, she was mid 50’s and she would come down often once a week just to take me across town to my physio and OT appointments.

Mum lives about 3 hours away in the country in a lovely isolated valley where there is NO MOBILE RECEPTION and when I go home for Christmas, mum and my younger sister cannot remember their internet password. So, for me THERE IS ALSO NO INTERNET!

Admittedly their internet is so little and so slow, it’s better to just let emails pile up. I’m less inclined to lose my mental ‘shit’ and want to kill people.

My internet is fast and reliable at home. My mum reminds me every time she visits when she claims “I just detected 400 emails”.

Yeah! She only visits for my fast internet, I don’t mess around with internet or computers when they don’t work, I have visual images of Jackson Pollack paintings. Anyway, I digress as per usual.

It is rather typical of family members when they are carers for people with brain injuries and disabilities to verbally spar with each other.

Most people with brain injuries I’m sure it’s like torture and torment because they lack the verbal skills or mental capacity to give as good as they get.

My mum probably doesn’t realise she should count herself blessed, I have a smart mouth and deliver her a sharp retort at times, despite it offending her. Because the early years I used to bite my tongue until I realised Passive/Aggressive didn’t help me.
