Today’s Lunch – 4th September 2019

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Well, Tuesday I went out on my scooter. Spring has sprung in Melbourne. So hellonwheels is out on the streets and I should mention, when scootering I have this soundtrack in my mind. It goes like this

Off to the dentist! Oh, how I hate the dentist, I do the reverse-planking. It’s when I am tense from head to toe and I feel like I’m being drowned. Handy hint. Put the suction tube between your lips and let it suck all the saliva free. I love having to tell them “If I’m drowning or not coping, I’ll raise my right hand” and they suggest using my left hand so I don’t get in their way, Mmmmmmm, no it will be my right.

Scootered home for a quick lunch and tops up on charge, drop some Oxy and then out again in the opposite direction for my next appointment, Electrolysis with my beautician. Haven’t had any for almost 3 years. Still can’t be a hairy single barren spinster. Had a bit of time in between as the beautician had an appointment.

Had this nice pecan tart and medicine at Taos’s in Thornbury. Mina the owner is so sweet, she cuts it up and sugars my coffee. She is the Greek Nona.

On my scooter home I stopped to take some snaps of street art, on the side of the Thornbury Telstra exchange.

Wednesday seems to have become my punchy, stabby and electrocute day. Chiropractor, acupuncture and physio.

Today’s offering is a beef burgundy pie, no salad, I feel terrible and medicine.

Today’s Lunch
Good Mental Health Day

It’s come around again! It’s that time of the month, when I am emotionally brittle and have my monthly migraine! Just as Mother Nature ordered! So help me GOD! (Sorry)

As I’m sliding into the Pause, Shark week doesn’t always happen, but it seems all the other symptoms come around like clockwork, right on time. I spend a day confused and over thinking the whole “I can’t afford to live past 65/I will never own my own home/Will I die alone surrounded by cats and half eaten by an Alsatian?/Grieving Original Helen/Finding my new identity” and this emotion lasts all day, only to be replaced by a stabbing eye-gouging pain behind my left eye(my version of a migraine these days!) and I struggle to find the motivation to move off my couch. Even though if I get through dinner, I am just a little closer to getting back to bed.

Alas, yesterday, being at home with appointments I made something num-num (tasty) lunch. Here is my panini-pressed light rye bread with salami, cherry tomatoes, marinated split green olives, marinated black kalamata olives and 4 different cheeses! Because, why wouldn’t you? Hello! A slice of tasty coon, Camembert (or as I call it: Bert!), Feta and a slice of Kraft Plastic cheese. Which reminds me of my childhood and it looked like this!

Note, how flattening it makes it so much easier to eat.

But one thing that has made me very, very happy lately is this!

You know those albums, where as soon as it ends your soul feels empty until you put it on again? And again! And again! Give it a listen. There is something in it for everyone…….it’s like a score that ebbs and flows.

Today I’ve got a full crazy day of chiropractor, then acupuncture, then physio and I guess today’s offering? So, punchy/stabby and electric-shocky! Guess I should do it on a full tummy! Today’s offering, Pancetta Quiche, my medicine and a complimentary Macaron.

Here’s Mika with her new friend. Mika and the Unicorn! Also, a great band name, si?

Cheers,
H
*Original Helen is every version of Helen before whatever this fucked up shit is?
I’ll have something more cheerful on Friday. Promise!

And hit Like!

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

A few weeks ago my Girl Friday and I made a batch of rum balls. A great Aussie classic from the CWA-Lady era. (Country Women’s Association) My food prep carer is much younger, often being mistaken as my daughter. I taught her the only way to measure the rum for the recipe. Follow the recipe, then Oops! My hand slipped and if you recall I’m not really a drinker. I’ve since given away more rum balls than I’ve actually eaten and I’ve got a 500mL bottle now to use, so more rum balls to make.

Here’s a nice recipe to try…

https://www.womensweeklyfood.com.au/recipes/classic-rum-balls-1632

My recommendation is keep them small, about 2 bites each, best with coffee.

Also, an apology, I’ve had 400 emails I’ve just found in an inbox I didn’t know I had. I normally visit the blog of every new follower or at least any new Like I see and hit them with a Like or comment to let you know I’ve seen you. So, apologies, I’m catching up.

Was at my favourite cafe in Clifton Hill yesterday as I was in the hood seeing my GP.I had the bolognaise arancini with a side salad. Latte (My medicine!) with an escargot and more medicine!

I’m busy at a meeting today and have my lovely Girl-Friday doing some admin for me while I’m at it. Hump day is not close enough for me to the weekend. Seriously, are we there yet? Friday is going to be painful.

Cheers,

H

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Oh my God, is this week over yet!? I cancelled my osteo appointment Monday. It was cold and I needed a long weekend.

Yesterday, I had my follow-up with the sleep clinic. Not a sleep over just an update with the specialist. I checked in and went back out to get a coffee. Thought today I might give you a recap in photo form of my appointment yesterday? I don’t consider myself particular photogenic as I look in the mirror these days and think it is what it is. So, your welcome!

Me before coffee…

After medicine!

And before I get to today’s offering. You may recall, the lovely Caroline my masseuse has been in Italy. She’s been doing a little gardening while her husband has been doing some maintenance. I think it’s safe to say neither know how to do Holiday.

They are in Casole d’Elsa 11K from SAN Giminiano. South of Florence, north of Siena. And I’m quoting her directly, it is too crowded to go there this time of year. She took these photos just for me yesterday.

And finally, today’s offering is a homemade sausage roll with a burning chilli chutney with side salad and medicine.

I’m in Thornbury today at Cafe Crunch as I was running out of time. So, I’m close to acupuncture.

Cheers,

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Had a bit of an adventure prompting a “Facebook post along the lines of my body protests to the pain, Bitch is that a bra? Go back to bed!” It was a Saturday after all, I went to the west! To see my friends

piece in an exhibition. Here is Larissa McFarlane herself!

The look on Larissa’s face when I climbed the stairs was priceless.

Yesterday, I joined a special club for women of a certain age! I did not have any fears to prompt joining this club for women, just that I’m now of “that age”

Anyone want to guess what I had done yesterday for the first time? All of my older carers (all bar one) told me it’s only painful for about 20 seconds, so that was promising. If you are not sure? I had my first mammogram! Go women’s health!

Now most importantly, in Clifton Hill today at my favourite café, today’s offering is a Zaffirini arancini (saffron, mint & peas) with the side salad and medicine.

Cheers,

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Last Friday I was very egg-cited! I have created a network of my neighbours who I order a bulk supply of free-range eggs. 20 eggs per tray for $14 and they are big, sometimes, even twins!

I’m delivering the last tray today.

This is my standard week of if you ask me why I’m so tired I will give this standard reply, as I did to my neighbour William when he dropped down for the lasagne, I portioned for him. “Do you want to go home and curl up into the foetal position and cry yourself to sleep tonight?” Because some tender young ears don’t need me to explain I’m peri-menopausal and have the crazy lady hormones that wipe me out two weeks out of every four. I was home yesterday and today I’m out all afternoon.

So, lunch today is vital, pancetta quiche with side salad and medicine!

Here’s the lasagne I made.

Cheers,
H

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

This week! God help me! For a single barren spinster, there are no bigger words to put the fear of God into me than these “school holidays!”

Parents should be made to enjoy their time with their spawn at home in solitude or grandparents even. Totally getting why grandma had a happy hour. I am not a fan of school holidays. My ovaries dry up.

My girl Tuesday (support worker, one of my regulars) was in a lift in the city and suggested the lift should have music. I reminded her in a building full of people with disabilities and oxide sensitivities that would not go down well. So I proceeded to put this song in her head!

You are welcome!

Was in the city for the last two days, yesterday I didn’t leave until 4.30pm meaning I actually got home in the dark. Don’t know if I’ve mentioned? I can’t see in the dark and I then had to complete all my chores and some and didn’t sit down and take my shoes off until 8pm. Although thanks to my Indian taxi driver Young Deepak, I had eaten dinner by 9pm. He had given me a curry.

I didn’t actually eat lunch today but such an early dinner prompted me to ask Noelle, “is this what it’s like to be old?” and Noelle is my age, so misplaced that it was.

Looking forward to lunch today, an almond croissant and my medicine!

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Why oh, why oh, why……must my brain hurt so very much? I seem to have two weeks of migraine-free before it returns for the other two weeks every month. I’m thinking it’s completely crazy-lady hormone related. Also have had a few way too busy weeks lately.

Thankfully, had a day at home yesterday and to come planning since it’s a bit on the nippy side in Melbourne.

Oh, here’s some good news, I received the results for a test. Negative, which is what you want in this case although I’ve never had a problem with my 2-yearly test and while at one point, my female GP who I see for this test only at one point used the words “I’ve lost my thing!” I informed her they were the words no-one wanted to hear and even better, this test is now only every 5 years. If anyone missed what I’m talking about? I’m talking about woman’s health. Friendly reminder, go get your pap smear.

Now back to normal programming. Today’s offering, it’s the breakfast of champions. A custard donut with medicine.

I had a rough start with my migraine. Breakfast was postponed. But here’s a little street art/graffiti close to where I get stabbed.

Cheers,
H

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

First I really need everyone to know winter has arrived to Melbourne. Officially a few days away still but have already unpacked my woollens and jackets! Mika is already loving sleeping on the polar fleece blanket but still yet to work out the benefits to being a lap cat. Sadly……….. She has started being less fussy about what she will eat or not. FYI: I got lucky with my fur baby, Mika. She is not food motivated! So, I have worked hard in the last 7 months to put some condition on her.

Also, heard news one of parcels was received in Norfolk, UK. Here’s a link……

https://oscardandelion.wordpress.com/2019/05/23/thank-you-helen/

Yesterday, I went to the cinema! I went to see John Wick Parabellum! Mmmmmmm, Keanu! (Sorry) the consensus might be that I am a little immune to unnecessary violence. My friend would likely count the rounds used (as in bullets) I would count the number of bodies. And I suggested the headcount first.

Should mention the hilarity of accidentally going into the incorrect cinema first. Saw five minutes of the new Rebel Wilson film The Hustle. Definitely need to see that next. I don’t get to the cinema much but when I do it’s totally worth it. I want one of those armchairs, it’s was amazing I nearly fell asleep I was so comfortable, just need a pillow and doona. (It’s like a blanket)

So, because I again have had to reschedule my dinner out with friends, third week in a row, I’ve decided to have some winter stodge for lunch! Today’s offering a Zaffarino Arancini with a side salad & my medicine

And for the very last item on my agenda? I finished Game of Thrones (G.O.T.) on the weekend! No spoilers. But done.

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Currently feeling hungover and seedy from the migraine I had yesterday! Why people drink I do not know? To be continued.

Today a shout out to my friend in Texas which is being hit by a tornado. You are in my thoughts. Stay safe.

To my friend in Florida, you know who you are. In Australia, cantaloupe has another name and that is Rockmelon. Not a fan either. Maybe the hubby should eat it outside?

And to my friend in Norfolk, I’m wondering if you have received your parcel? I have not heard from you for a while.

Before I get to today’s lunch offering, I’m hoping you can help a friend to reach his goal? This is also an example of how the NDIS his failing its clients.

With permission, my administrator Noelle who does my blog without charge to me, has a son who at a very young age had a stroke. This led to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy (C.P.) He is now 28 years young; he has never driven a car but loves V8 Supercars. Under his previous funding he had this passion financially paid for. He had day trips and overnight hotel stays paid for so he could go to the races and mingle with the drivers and grid girls. It’s how he produces his blog and website www.williamsperfectride.com The NDIA would  clearly prefer him to stay at home and not follow his passion at tax-payers expense. While V8 Supercars and such is not my thing, helping someone get to do their thing they love, is my thing. Can you please help him? Every little bit helps.

https://www.pozible.com/project/getting-back-to-the-track

Not doing any spoilers for the final season of GOT. Will binge the whole season on the weekend.

Now, after all of that done, today’s offering is another Ortolani quiche with side salad and my medicine!
