Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Nothing dramatic this week. Got a cold. Not happy Jan!

Usually my Wednesday is the only day that I can expect to run smoothly. If I see Young John it’s a big win! If not, it’s not a disaster I just jump on a tram but given even the smallest change I can get creative and adjust my plan of attack. After years of my standard lunch/punchy/stubby day things are soon about to be shaken up.

Running smoothly

Guess, I’ll treat it like an opportunity to stretch my brain muscle. My brain already hurts just thinking about it, I guess it’s good I’ve got a few weeks to get ready and consider all my options. To be continued……….

Exercise brain

Meanwhile, today’s lunch! Think I’m in my pizza faze. Don’t know what it’s called but it’s got a nice slice of buffalo mozzarella on top and medicine!

And because I got here early, I have my ‘own’ office.

Own office

Fingers crossed no one comes in with grizzly children or first world problems. Had to tune out a local woman discussing her renovation woes with her friends. She was discussing how she wanted to ‘borrow’ space from the laneway next to her house. Or maybe it was the ‘air’ above the laneway, I know! Can you feel my eye roll from there? Also, I think the photos on the wall is very much what would be at my Nona’s house if she were still here.

Today’s   Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Now, for something a little different. Are you aware I spend my Saturdays off-grid? No emails, no mobile, no touching my diary. Don’t do ‘Adult’ and if I can avoid it barely do ‘Person’ (No shoes, no bra, no having to be polite to people) so, Saturday went like this, Melbourne collected by my sister and her partner around 9am.Jerrilderie, Tocumwal, Griffith and a 70th birthday party and a cousin’s reunion. Haven’t seen most of my relatives on my mum’s side since my grandfather’s funeral over ten years ago. I hadn’t had my disability for long and thankfully not too many questions about what I did, or what happened to my arm.  It there’s nothing like being asked how often I see my older sister who only lives 90 minutes away, how often we see each other since we live so close and my sister stepping back to let me answer. Twice a year, to kill a conversation. Isn’t there always an assumption that if someone in a family is sick or broken that people can put their own stuff aside to help? My sister mentioned being busy. She has just been in Europe for a month’s holiday. Great pictures by the way.

Family reunion

In general, I’ve found if you are not married or in a relationship, don’t have children and don’t work, nobody really asks anything. Oh, I was asked how I was, sure but you know the only answer I gave was “Good. Yeah, good. I’m here!” What am I meant to say? But really, there’s not much to be done about it. I did however meet my second cousin, he was still in a high chair. What just happened? They are prolific breeders up in New South Wales. (I don’t mean to make that sound wrong) So, here are some fun photos.

You know you are in a small country town when you see this.

Pastries

And the Ned Kelly things.

Ned Kelly

And the only photo I took of our motel in Griffith. Seemingly, the land of oranges and grapevines.

Motel

And impressively, with all my years of clubbing in Melbourne and playing my music obnoxiously loud, I’ve never been to a party where all of a sudden around 11pm, we realised it had gotten quiet outside only to be told the police had come and shut the party down. Neighbours had complained about the music and the police agreed it wasn’t even very loud. Outside it was very cold and this was a great source of warmth, if you could be on a constant rotisserie.

Fire pit

Never has my favourite App on my phone been so abused. Yes, the weather App. 9 degrees outside and the most important part. “feels like 4”. They also breed them tough in New South Wales. Clearly.

Cold Weather

Oh, not to mention the birthday cake?  Did I mention, they are a family and generation of sewers.

Birthday Cake

And the CWA approved Pavlova!

Pavlova

So Sunday, back to Melbourne. Left Griffith around midday. How long did it take to get back? I hear you ask? All friggin day! Seriously, so far! We came back via Yarrawonga and stopped to catch up with my dad. He doesn’t live there but is there regularly. Lunch, lemon, lime and bitters with a coffee for the road.

Plane

And, where were we?

Today’s lunch!

I got distracted by talking to real people. They were lovely. Had pizza today, no salad. Just pizza.
And medicine. Have been watching the pizza show by some Italian hipster dude from New Jersey.
So, let there be pizza!

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Despite a busy week I managed to get down here two days in a row. This is what I had here yesterday. It was a yummy cwoissant (imagine me saying it with a bit of a French Accent) with pumpkin, feta and spinach with medicine. To go with the migraine I had.

Also had added drama of no landline or internet and my mobile was low on battery all friggin day!
Not suggesting the cause of yesterday’s migraine but sure as heck didn’t help!

No internet

And today’s offering I feel a little like I may have found a work-around to having a Arancini Zaffarino. Just come twice, week and my standard medicine.

Even got to scooter today! Two hipsters following me on the footpath on their bikes, huh? When I pulled up in front of the acupuncturist to park the Hipsters thanked me, I don’t know what for because I’m legally allowed to use the footpath and I have insurance. They legally cannot and don’t (have insurance.)

Migraine prevails………..next!

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Another mid-week calm, big day Monday with lots of steps, yeah, I’m one of those. I count steps! (Or my phone does……) 7,000+, Tuesday 39? Yeah, lucky to have a lazy day at home. Trying not to commit to getting this cold that is attempting to settle.

Steps

Considering my somewhat small amount of Italian blood I don’t understand chilli or garlic but have dosed myself with both along with my supply of echinacea.

Garlic

Today’s offering is the Ortolani quiche with the side salad and my medicine, of course. The quiche is with grilled vegetables. Really tasty and tough people really do eat quiche!

Meeting a friend

It’s funny how my weeks pan out at times. Every week is the usual crazy. But this week, I’ve managed to make it more social. So, Monday.  Had lunch close to home with a friend. This is my lunch and hers.

Tuesday, had planned to go to another place a little further with a friend who has just returned from a holiday in Cuba, I always invite her to visit and I take her on an adventure and I love that she is open to doing different things. We have done the tulip festival, visited my Mr Miyagi, many, many lunches, we have visited a large bonsai supplier, and the day was no different. While, the intended location of lunch was not open we went for a wander and came across a cafe that we both enjoyed a vegetable curry. Mine came with a roti folded in the shape of a napkin.

We had a discussion that my Wednesday posts have already hit a Arancini slump I fall into for winter. So, in my efforts to change things up a little, I hope you enjoyed these pictures for something completely different.

And finally, today’s offering, Moroccan chicken and turmeric rice salad.
And my standard medicine!

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

So rather than scootering today, to fit in with Young John’s other important people I’m not on Hellonwheels. This is the time of year every Wednesday is a day to wear my scootering T-shirt! It states on the front “Eat. Sleep. Ride. Repeat” and as it’s Autumn, every Wednesday could be the last until spring and even then, spring is pretty wet.

T Shirt

I may not have mentioned but Hellonwheels is not waterproof! Sadly. After a few crazy days and weeks, I’ve made it to Clifton Hill in time for lunch before the Punchy/Stabby starts! I’m sitting in the front window today as there are lots of well-behaved doggies waiting for fog biscuits. Frankie is present, let’s see if I can snap a photo of Frankie with her dad. Frankie will beg for food from complete strangers. It’s cute.

Today’s offering is an Arancini Zucca (pumpkin and spinach) and my standard medicine.

When I got to the chiro I ran into Young Johns wife! That’s right! Her names Young Betty!

Anzac Day

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Respectfully, as today is ANZAC Day in Australia. It’s a public holiday. So, today is not a normal Wednesday. When is it ever?

Todays Lunch

I should mention any public holiday in OZ gives Bogans permission to get drunk and be annoying and obnoxious.

https://www.army.gov.au/our-history/traditions/anzac-day

On account of my chiropractor taking the day off and the presumption that my favourite cafe being closed. (I will allow it) I decided to stay closer to home. (My rib is out again so that will have to wait until Friday I guess! My acupuncturist is not big on taking days off. So, I’m still able to get stabbed today! Yeah me! A goodnights sleep is assured.

Good nights sleep

And with another crazy week in the life of Helen I only have to squeeze in the chiropractor on another day. I’m getting some MRI’s later Thursday so while it’s needed for a specialist appointment next week, even that creates havoc to a normal week.

this_crazy_week

So, today’s offering is spanakopita and medicine. Even snuck in a kip shoes on and all. Since I’ve got my constant companion. A migraine! When does it end?

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Another Wednesday dawns and much to share. Firstly, an apology for Monday’s post arriving a day later than normal. You might be aware I post Monday, Wednesday and Friday with an attention to promptness?

So, to explain. I’m sure you will understand my lovely Noelle my administrator who does all the magic to put my words live, mourns the passing of her mother. And she was put to rest Monday. While she lives in Sydney and I in Melbourne I finally got to meet her! Not the best of circumstances however after about six years of daily contact and a rare phone all. We actually got to meet! And yes, I made her try the prickly pear (it’s a very short season of which I bought only 12) Here is a picture of us.

Slumber party

Just a couple of kids

By the time I remembered to get a photo we were both in our jimmy jimmies (slumber party!) and very tired. Hence the above! No, it’s not us but I gave Noelle creative license to go crazy! Sadly, she was only here for one night! But I made sure to take her for coffee! Since MELBOURNE does have far superior coffee to Sydney!

Melbourne Coffee

But the excitement for the week was not yet over, what else could there be, I hear you ask? Monday early evening around 6.30pm, the fire alarm went off in the apartment block and we had to evacuate. Sounds a bit exciting right? Will Helens fantasy of being rescued from her second-floor balcony by a ‘hot’ fireman really happen? The block is six stories and there are lots of apartments and never an opportunity to meet anyone. Well, until there is an incident like this, after pulling on my cuff and collar, grabbing my bag and walking stick I left the building. In the lift, where it clearly states in case of fire avoid using the lift! (How else was I supposed to get out?) I later learnt there are two staircases I’m just hoping there is a handle on the right-hand side and in a serious potentially smoke-filled environment I don’t get pushed down the stairs? He sent fantasy? What! A girl can dream!

Fire Alarm

After standing around downstairs (wish I’d bought a jumper…..bbbbrrrrrr)  not one but two firetrucks came! People started heading back upstairs. I asked two firemen if it was ok to go back up? What had been the problem? He told me someone had been cooking bread rolls and they had caught on fire! And had it been me?

Fire truck

Hot fireman

How dare he! And on the lift ride back up having started a conversation with another tenant who provided me with some relief that this happens about once-yearly, she was going upstairs to find her cat who would likely be traumatised. One cat condo had appeared downstairs in the evacuation so seemingly good pet parenting there and if I had a cat I would have struggled to catch, shove in a cat condo and get it and myself outside, stairs aside! Again, fantasy prevails!

In the lift

In the lift, I noticed the only other people in the building I know. They swapped car spaces with me so I could access power for my scooter and they live two doors down from me, so have been initiated into my free food trade agreement. So, I asked him in the lift if he had been baking? Rightly he denied such action but there was a murmur of humour. I later messaged him apologising ‘bake-shaming’ him in public. He took it so well and that was just Monday, this is why I stopped writing my Monday Hot off the Press posts. They were while accurate, so busy.

Baking bread

Now, it’s Wednesday and with a grasp on calm today’s offering is another Ortolani quiche with a side salad. And my medicine.

KITTEN WITH BLUE BLANKET

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Well, last week I visited Neko Cat Lounge in Melbourne. Prompting me to email a photo to my property manager with the sentence “Can I have her?” Accompanied by this photo.

Jody

And an assortment of others.

Two cats were adopted that day.

Bruce here, would have gone home too but he wouldn’t come out of his tree! This was all you could see of him and I confess I took advantage and gave his head some pats, he was baby-soft! He was a 3.5-year-old rag doll. Both Ms T and I wanted to see him come out of his tree so we could see all of him. While he didn’t come out another cat climbed into the cat condo awaiting Bruce I suggested “2 for 1?”

Bruce

Waiting to hear from my property manager.

And just because my carer and her hands-on Monday.

So, while I enjoy lunch, today’s offering, Pancetta quiche with side salad and my medicine.

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Well, midweek in a short week. This Friday is Good Friday, so if you were planning too many things this week and will struggle with only a 4-day week. You can blame Jesus! And strap in, next week is a short one also!

Good Friday

Here’s something a bit different and, well I think interesting? This was breakfast! You know those days where you think this will not make a very good photo?

Prickly Pear
This is the Prickly Pear and no, I can’t describe it but it tastes delicious and despite only touching tongs and the plastic bag I still had annoying thistles in my ONE GOOD HAND! File under weird Wog food. Your welcome!

Today’s offering, is an Zaffarino Arancini with side salad. (Saffron rice, mint and peas) With my medicine!

Zafferini

Latte

And you should know this is not what I would cook at home.
